An interview with Treat Your Planet and their plastic-free shop
Our ‘Meet:’ articles are our way of showcasing and celebrating the efforts of normal, lovely people who are changing the world’s outcomes both big and small.
We chatted to Alex from Treat Your Planet to find out what caused a pair of beach lovers set up an online shop.
What they do: Treat Your Planet sell reusable bottles and collapsable straws to fight single use plastic head on. Amazing news! They are currently planning their first beach clean up event (check out their Instagram linked below to ensure you don’t miss out!).
Why we love Treat Your Planet: 10% of all profits are invest in cleaning UK coasts. They are dedicated to stopping the use of plastic straws and single use plastic to change the bleak future our beautiful oceans currently hold.
How we know Treat Your Planet: We saw these guys on Instagram and were excited how reactionary they were to the plastic problem facing our coastlines. We had to get to know more about them and share their plans!
Hello, who are you and what is your personal eco story?
We are Treat Your Planet. Myself and my partner have always tried to do our bit by re-using as much as we can and watching what we throw away. Recently we began to see more and more devastating effects of single use plastic, especially at beaches across the U.K! We visited the beautiful Woolacombe Beach in Devon only about a month ago and at first glance there does not seem to be much of an issue with plastic but when you look a little harder, small plastic bits were scattered all over where we were lay within an arms reach!
Scenarios like this really got us thinking… Yes, we are doing our bit by being careful, but people don’t truly know much about the scale of the single use plastic problem. Our efforts were not making a big enough impact.
How and when did you start your business?
After a chat one evening in December 2018 we decided to create our own eco friendly company to offer amazing products that people can reuse over and over again. We named the company ‘Treat Your Planet’, so far we have reusable bottles and reusable collapsible straws. It doesn’t sound like much to most but we truly believe that just one person using a reusable bottle instead of buying single use plastic bottles all year round makes a huge difference to our ‘plastic footprint’. We are also investing 10% of all the profits from sales directly towards beach clean ups across the U.K. You can find us on Instagram, Facebook or by googling us.
What challenges have you faced while becoming more eco and trying to encourage people to believe in your cause?
The challenges I have faced from encouraging people to believe in Treat Your Planet and our eco cause has been that some people either just don’t care and seem quite selfish to the fact that we are destroying our planet at an alarming rate, or a few people I have spoken to don’t believe plastic pollution is real. Some have said ‘its not as bad as they make out’, like some people don’t believe in ‘climate change’.
What is your top eco product you swear by?
My personal favourite eco product is our TYP reusable bottle! It’s such an easy way to start reducing your plastic footprint! They are great because you can fill our bottles with anything you want… it means there is no reason to use a plastic bottle again. The double walled stainless steel material means contents are kept hot for up to 12 hours and cold for up to 24 hours. Even better… it will save you money in the long run. By refilling your bottle at home you have no need to buy a drink when your out. It’s a no brainer 🙂
What about your page/organisation are you most proud of?
What makes us proud is every time someone decides to purchase a product we get super excited knowing that we have made it that much easier for that particular person on there eco journey -they get to enjoy our reusable essentials just as much as we do! Hard work really does pay off in the end and what better way for it to pay off then to be creating a better environment for our future and future generations beyond us.
Can we all just give a round of applause for TYP!
Small print: This is not an ad. TYP have not sent us anything in return for this post. We are shouting loud to the rooftops to help support small businesses who are making efforts to change outcomes!
If you have something worth shouting about and want us to Meet: you please contact us! We are interested in talking to anyone who has made a positive environmental impact either big or small.
