Quick Vegan: Hummus five ways

Our ‘Quick Vegan:’ series are short, sharp pieces that get to the point. You’re a busy person who needs to eat, so check out our simple recipes that get from screen to stomach in 20m or less.

This article contains recipes for

  • Simple Hummus
  • Red Pepper Hummus
  • Moroccan Hummus
  • Sweet Chilli Hummus
  • Sun-dried Tomato Hummus

For each of these recipes you will start with making the basic hummus.

What you’ll need:

  • Food processor or hand blender
  • Microwave
  • 400g can of chickpeas
  • 3-4 table spoons of Olive Oil
  • 2 table spoons of Tahini
  • 1-2 cloves of Garlic
  • a pinch of Salt
  • a pinch of Pepper
  • a lime

What to do:

  • Microwave the chickpeas in the chickpea water in a heatproof bowl for 3 minutes
  • Chop or blitz one or two cloves of garlic in the processor until small (the garlic won’t be cooked so if you’re not a huge fan go for one clove)
  • Drain the chickpeas and add to the processor or a bowl if if you are using a hand blender, pour in the olive oil and tahini and blitz until smooth
  • Add the salt and pepper to taste, squeeze half a lime into the mix
  • If the chickpeas don’t combine add some more olive oil
  • Spoon into a bowl, sprinkle with pepper and squeeze the rest of the lime over the top

To make the other hummus recipes follow the above noting the changes below…

  • Red Pepper Hummus
    • Blitz a whole jar of drained chargrilled red peppers before you add the chickpeas
  • Moroccan Hummus
    • Add 1 tsp of Tumeric and 1 tsp of Cumin when the Tahini goes in
    • Sprinkle paprika over the top upon serving
  • Sweet Chilli Hummus
    • Add 1 table spoon of Olive Oil then swap the rest for Sweet Chilli Sauce
    • Add in an extra 3 tbsp of Sweet Chilli Sauce or enough until you enjoy the taste
  • Sun-dried Tomato Hummus
    • Blitz 30g of drained Sun-dried Tomatoes before you add the chickpeas, add in a few chopped Basil leaves
    • To serve roughly chop a few more tomatoes, sprinkle over and top with some whole Basil leaves

This recipe is fool proof and has endless flavour combinations. You just need to start with the basic recipe and chuck in whatever you feel like. We love making our own hummus as it stops us buying single-use plastic packed hummus, there are way better flavour combinations which are either jarred, tinned or veg which aren’t covered in plastic. And you can re-use all your single-use plastics to keep the goodness in the fridge.
